Great Abaco Highway bypass road taking shape
ABACO, The Bahamas – The new bypass road under construction on the Great Abaco highway is taking shape.
Six months ago the Government awarded a contract for $965,818,95 to Knowles Construction and Development Company Ltd. to build the bypass road in Central Abaco.
“There is traffic congestion in downtown,” said Public Works and Transport Minister the Hon. Neko C. Grant.
“This road will eliminate the heavy traffic in the downtown area which permits one to land at Marsh Harbour International Airport and proceed to north Abaco without going downtown.
“The road connects from the south and brings you to the airport. It will take you to downtown as well, just past the Government Administration building. On the west it will take you to North Abaco,” he added.

Construction of new international airport in Abaco making progress
ABACO, Bahamas -- The new $27.3 million international terminal, air traffic control tower and fire/crash rescue facility under construction in Marsh Harbour, Abaco is nearing completion.
The current 3,315 square feet building is being replaced with a new 24,000 square feet single storey terminal immediately west of the existing terminal.
The modern, state-of the-art facility will have the capacity to serve approximately 200,000 passengers who use the airport annually.
“We have a lot to be done,” said contractor Fletcher McIntosh. “In order to be finished there is some rough work that needs to be done.”
The airport’s design includes among other amenities a taxi call-up and public parking area; police, security and airport manager’s offices; concessions stands, combined domestic and international passenger departure lounge.
The Hon. Neko Grant, Minister of Public Works and Transport, said it is expected that the $4 million flight tower will be manned by Abaconians. “There is a recruitment programme going on as we speak so they can be trained in time to occupy the tower on completion of the building,” he said.

Cooper’s Town dock set for reconstruction
COOPER’S TOWN, Abaco – The contract signing for the construction of a concrete dock to replace the wooden dock in Cooper’s Town was received with applauds from residents in this northern community during a ceremony here on Thursday, February 9.
The Bahamas Government executed a $460,100 contract with Calvin E Parker Construction to reconstruct the dock that was damaged during Hurricane Irene in 2011.
Public Works and Transport Minister the Hon. Neko C. Grant said the dock utilised by fishermen, pleasure boaters and travellers to the neighbouring Spanish Cay has previously undergone repairs.
“Unfortunately, the dock was again severely damaged last year during Hurricane Irene,” Mr. Grant said. “It has now been determined that there is a need for complete reconstruction of the timber portion of the dock along with extension of the existing concrete abutment.”
Braving the wind, chilly temperature and occasional rain to witness the event, residents gathered under a tent arranged at the site of the dock posed for reconstruction. Also present was the MP for North Eleuthera the Hon. Alvin Smith, permanent secretary Colin Higgs, director John Canton, resident engineer John Schaefer and administrators Theophilus Cox and Cephas Cooper. Local Government representatives and senior Government officials were also in attendance. The Cooper’s Town Primary School provided music for the ceremony.
